SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDE

One thing that makes start-ups different from other businesses is that they have what is called a “global scale.” That means that the business has the ability to expand almost anywhere in the world. This makes start-ups just a little different from a lemonade stand that can cover only one block or a lawn-mowing business that is limited to the lawns you can easily get to.

Think back to that first custom white bow tie I made for a friend at school. On that day Mo’s Bows had its first paying customer. I couldn’t make a custom bow tie for every person on the globe. But at that time, what I offered had a customer base in my area that was ready for my product. Your business may start out the same way, and that’s great! But that’s the reason you need to go find your customers—and you can do that by establishing and building up your social media presence.

Even though I had a great story to share with people about the creation of Mo’s Bows, it still took a lot of work to get it out there. Memphis, where I live, has nice clothing stores, but soon my mom and I had visited them all. People would tell me that a growing business must be “scalable,” meaning that if you can make ten of something, you should be able to make one hundred or even one thousand. But if all of this is based on just one person’s efforts, you can’t grow because you can’t scale by just yourself. I like to remind other entrepreneurs that you can’t scale a person.

But you can scale a story by sharing it on social media.

When I started Mo’s Bows, I had done some local new stories about the company, but that wasn’t enough to get the word out about my product in a large way. So I set up Facebook and Instagram accounts for my business, and that’s where I was able to share the story about me and about Mo’s Bows with a larger consumer base.

I’m so glad I started my business in the age of social media. It’s no doubt a huge reason for my success. In fact, my first national TV appearance on The Steve Harvey Show came about from the show’s wardrobe stylist, who saw my Facebook page. And even now, five years after being on the show, many of my customers tell me that’s where they first heard about Mo’s Bows. The clip has been shared and viewed on social media thousands of times, giving people the opportunity to share my story with like-minded individuals. I noticed an immediate increase in followers, website traffic, and sales after this TV appearance aired.

To get a sense of where people are hearing about your business, it’s a good idea to ask those who send you requests for products or appearances to ask how they heard about you. For example, whenever I get a request to appear on a show
