The following Monday, Robert advises me I have an interview with former DI Fleming on Wednesday at Palen Creek Correctional Centre. I thank him and let Pig and Maria know things are in motion.

Wednesday morning comes, and Maria and I head out to Palen Creek Prison. She precedes me out in the Camry, whilst I take the Prado. Neither vehicle’s registration plates will show up in any video surveillance. Well, they’ll show up, but they’ll be illegible due to a special chemical coating we give all the vehicles we use.

Once Maria arrives, she gives me a call, telling me she’s got a good spot directly facing the entrance of the car park. We want to see if anyone takes particular notice of my arrival or departure, so she’ll wait with the dashcam running, recording all vehicles that come and go. The dashcam is higher tech than the run-of-the-mill models; it even has infrared for when we need vision at night.

She tells me it’s pretty quiet in the car park – only one car so far. I describe Warden Thomas’s Ford Courier for her, but she says there’s nothing like it around. She then remembers she saw a ‘staff parking’ sign on the other side, so we figure it’s likely there.

As I approach the prison, Maria again confirms there’s no one around. I know nobody has followed me, as I did the ‘slow down, speed up, then stop suddenly’ routine. All a bit over the top, really, as no one knows it’s me turning up for the interview, but it broke the monotony of the drive out!

I head over to the office and present my credentials – my false credentials, that is. Soon enough, I find there’s only one pace in the prison system: slow. But hey, I’m a patient guy, so it doesn’t faze me.

I’m eventually led inside, having passed through two separate scanners and left my phone and keys in a small locker. On my way to the interview room, where former Detective Inspector Jack Fleming is already sitting, I keep an eye open for Warden Thomas but see no sign of him.

Fleming does a double take when he sees me. Clearly, he remembers me from the night not so very long ago when I killed Benson.

Good. I need him rattled.

I take a seat and slide my (false) card across the table, not saying a word. I let the silence stretch, but the minutes tick by without Fleming showing any signs of cracking, and I remember he’s a seasoned interviewer, having been a senior detective for many years. So, I try a different tactic.

‘Flem, I can have you out of here in a minute.’ I click my fingers. ‘Not to set you free, but so I can interview you without the constraints they impose in prison. Not saying you’d survive our talk, mind you, but that wouldn’t bother me. One less crim walking the earth, as far as I’m concerned.’

I try the silent treatment again. This time, I see he’s getting a little anxious.
