“You haven’t learnt anything new—or come up with any new plan?” Myfanwy stood in the kitchen doorway, her school bag slumped on the floor beside her, and her hands on her hips. “What on earth did you do all day?”

I exchanged a glance with Olly. We’d been very well occupied, but it was not the sort of occupied we could share with our young companions. “We did take the King’s Stones out to the farther farms. We’ve covered all the coastal properties.”

“But that only took you half a day at the very most!”

“Put it this way,” Olly said, reaching for my hand beneath the cover of the table. “We didn’t lose any more powers.”

I withdrew my hand, folding my arms as I pouted. “I should like to know what the two of you have done that is so great.”

Duhywynt looked up from the biscuit tin which he was already raiding. “We have done more than you! Myfanwy has discovered something of import in the book of our paying guest.”

“When did Beverly loan you a book?” Olly craned his neck to look at Myfanwy.

She rubbed her elbow. “Loaned might be an overstatement. It doesn’t matter. The book was a collection of myths and sea-lore, and there was one story in there that stood out.” She dropped her bag entirely, coming to sit at the table. “There was this witch, right?”

“There often is.” Olly lined up mugs on the bench. “Did this one borrow things without asking, too?”

Myfanwy gave him a look, and I did my best to mask my smile. She may be a witch, but in some manners, Myfanwy was still very much a child.

My smile faded. The combination had never before struck me as alarming, but the thought of a child’s petty grudges with the power of a witch behind them was alarming. Perhaps I should be nicer to her?

Myfanwy resumed her story. “This witch made a net of her hair and trapped a passing knight.”

“She tricked him, like you were tricked, brother. The knight saw a bed in the woods, and feeling tired, lay down to rest. The blanket was the net disguised.” Duhywynt’s eyes glowed.

He did seem different. Was the recent turmoil good for him? “Do not eat all the biscuits. You will not do justice to Olly’s cooking.”

“Go on with the story, Myfanwy,” Olly turned the jug on. “The knight’s caught. What happened then?”

“The witch gave him an ultimatum. He had to promise to kill a rival of hers before she would let him out of the net. The knight tried everything he could to escape the net, but it was too well made. Eventually, he gave in and made the promise. The only problem was that the witch’s rival was a beautiful young maid, fair and just and all the rest of it. And the knight immediately fell in love with her.” Myfanwy beamed, holding her hand out for the biscuit tin. “So he confessed to the lady that he was there to kill her
