The cloud came down from the hills the next morning, mingling with the sea mist, and creating one of those mysterious days for which the Llŷn is known. It had not lifted, even at lunchtime, and I stood by the window to eat my lunch, watching for Myfanwy’s arrival.
The phone rang. Olly went to answer it—hoping for another day shearing probably. His voice floated back through the open door. “What? No…I’ll ask, but I’m pretty sure we haven’t seen her.”
Myrhydion was doing the dishes, but he paused as Olly came back through the door. “Myfanwy?”
Olly shook his head. “Freckles—Drew’s little dog. She went outside this morning to do her business and never came back.”
“That is his fault,” I said immediately. “He should never let a dog, no matter how small and gentle, go off on her own. No doubt he did not take pains to secure her properly.”
“But you haven’t seen her?” Myrhydion and I shook our heads. Olly stepped back into the hall. “Sorry, no. We haven’t seen her, but we’ll help you look. Where have you checked so far?”
Myrhydion dried his hands on the tea towel, no doubt pleased to abandon his chore. “Of course we must look. It does not bear thinking about, that little dog lost on the Llŷn.”
I shivered. Had Freckles somehow become my grandfather’s latest victim? But no—Edenvert would keep him in check.
Myfanwy arrived while Olly and Myrhydion were pulling on their boots and jackets. “I see you’ve already heard,” she said, her hands in the pocket of her own waterproof.
“About Freckles? Yes.” Olly said. “We’re taking the cliff tops.”
Myfanwy looked at me. “Where’s your jacket?”
Her assumption I would join the search annoyed me. “I’m not going.”
“Why not?”
I shrugged. “It is not my problem that Drew doesn’t take better care of his dog. I told him to keep her on a leash. That he has ignored my advice is no fault of mine.”
“I can’t believe you.” Myfanwy’s voice had something of her grandmother’s tone. Her mouth was set in a strong line of disapproval. “You love animals—no one loves animals more than you—and you’re fond of Freckles. But you’re going to ignore that she’s missing and in need of help just because you’re grumpy I spent time with Drew?”
I gulped. “It is not like that at all!”
Myfanwy folded her arms. “Then how is it?”
I cast around frantically for some excuse. “I have not yet been to see Evans Oliver today. He gets anxious if I do not visit him—and you do not want an overly friendly seal around while you are searching for a missing dog. He would be a nuisance to all.”
Myfanwy looked at me steadily. “I really thought you were better than this.” Her plaits swung behind her as she stalked out.
I stared after her. My ears rung, her words echoing through my head, but my mind did not take them in.
There was a clatter behind me. Myrhydion had dropped his boot. I met his and Olly’s identical expressions of surprise, and felt a hot prickle of shame catch in my chest.
