CHAPTER

Fifteen

I’m frozen to the spot. I’m so shocked that I can’t seem to remember one word of the English language.

“Mefgh.”

That’s all I can say. That’s it. The first time I meet my dad and that’s how I greet him. Mefgh.

“Sorry,” he says, blinking back tears. “I know this must be a shock.”

Merlin, with one paw on my foot, hisses at him in confusion.

Maverick is not what I imagined. He’s tall and slender, with a mop of bedraggled fair hair, big green eyes and slightly pronounced front teeth that have a gap in the middle. He’s wearing a floral green shirt and black trousers with a long purple overcoat and scuffed brown leather shoes.

To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what I imagined my dad to be like, but I do know I didn’t imagine anyone like him.

“May I come in?” he asks, giving me a hopeful smile.

“Uh . . . I. . . C-could you wait one . . . one second. Wait here one second, yes,” I manage to blurt out, before stepping back and slamming the door shut.

With no one else in the hallway, Merlin is able to transform from cat to moth, flying up to my shoulder, landing and changing into his tarantula form.

“What are we going to do?” he asks desperately.

“I’m not sure,” I say, my throat tightened with panic.

Collecting myself, I hurry back to the sitting room and stand in the doorway, trying to act as normal and carefree as possible.

“Was it Howard?” Iris asks, looking up from her laptop.

“Yes,” I lie, before clearing my throat. “Owen? Could I borrow you for a moment? I need your help with . . . uh . . . something.”

“Sure,” he says, getting up and following me out the room.

Iris raises her eyebrows at me, flashing me a knowing smile, and I want to tell her this is absolutely NOT what she thinks, but I don’t have the time for that right now.

“You OK?” Owen asks when we reach the kitchen. “You look stressed. Have you accidentally eaten another bug?”

“No! That was one time! And the bug flew right in my mouth when I was laughing in the park and . . . anyway, that doesn’t matter right now.” I run a hand through my hair and lower my voice to a whisper. “Maverick is outside.”

“WHAT?” he cries, before I remind him to keep his voice down. “Are you serious?”

“Yes!”

“Why?”

“I don’t know! I didn’t invite him!”

“How does he know where you live?”

“When I wrote to him I gave him my address so he could write back!”

“Morgan! You didn’t think to give him your email address instead?”

“You told me he was old-school!” I argue in a hushed tone. “And I didn’t think he’d just show up unannounced.”

His forehead furrows in concentration. “What do you want to do?”

“I don’t know,” I say, throwing my hands up in the air. “I don’t know what to do. He’s asked if he can come in. I guess he’s come all this way. He says .
