Jess had grown accustomed to seeing Noahâs name flash on her incoming message alerts. He started sending her good morning texts with pictures of his view from his run, and she did the same. She wasnât brave enough to suggest they run together, but she hoped he would.
Instead he asked her something else. On the second day of texting, he asked her on a real date.
How do you feel about zoos? I hear the one in Colorado Springs is good. Iâve been meaning to check it out. I have Wednesday off. Would you like to go with me?
She forced herself to wait a few minutes before agreeing. She didnât want to seem too eager. Now that the plan was set, she couldnât stop thinking about it.
Her class load was really light on Wednesdays, and once Ashley found out that Noah had asked Jess on a date, she practically demanded to cover Jessâs classes. And it worked out nicely that none of her showcase rehearsals were that day.
Getting ready for the date was a different experience. Jess had been on a lot of dates over the years, but usually they were more âarm candyâ kinds of dates. Either she was meant to make the guy look good, or she wanted the guy to notice how good she looked. This felt different.
A zoo wasnât really a place to dress up. She perused her closet. Her drawers were mostly full of dance or workout clothes, and her closet was full of blouses and dresses. One aspect of her motherâs brainwashing was the expectation to always dress well. Even when she stayed home, she still wore stylish clothes.
She picked through her wardrobe and was able to find something that looked like it would be comfortable enough for the zoo but would still be nice enough for a date. She slipped on a knee-length red skirt with white flowers and paired it with a tied off-white tee and some black, comfortable, strappy sandals. A going-out skirt and only-to-the-studio sandals with a never-be-seen-in-public shirt according to her usual standards.
She styled her long, flowing blonde hair with some loose waves. Even though it was a deviation from her normal, she liked the way she looked. Yes, she still put plenty of effort into her appearance, but she also factored in comfort. She had never done that for a date before. Pre-epiphany Jess probably would have worn a tight dress and heels. The thought seemed borderline horrifying now. She smiled at herself in the mirror, thinking of her progress.
After quite some time going back and forth between the bathroom and her bedroom, she emerged and went to the kitchen for a glass of cool water. Based on how her insides felt, you would think she had just done thirty minutes of aerobics. This was the visceral reaction of what felt like her first date ever. It kind of was. It was the first date where she intended to go with the flow and be herself, whoever that was.
