38. I have done photography for years.

Shot many a weddings for poor folks and all I asked for was rolls of film. Film was expensive, so I would ask for twice as much as I needed for the wedding and shoot all the pictures. I would turn the shot rolls over to the couple and then have the rolls left over for my own use. Cheap photographer for them, experience for me. And I had more film to play with other things. Word got around and I was pretty good, so I shot a lot of weddings. My family was my backup and my kids started to groan when they knew we were headed for another stranger’s wedding in another strange church while they sat in back and carried film and lenses for me. My wonderful (second) husband would watch me all over the church and wait till I signed to him and run to me with more film.

One day, my adopted son was getting married. It had been several months since I shot one, and I got out my equipment and was checking it all out the night before and couldn’t make my flash work. This was catastrophic! I had to have a working flash by 2 pm the next day! So the next morning we started hitting pawn shops trying to find a used Minolta flash .

We hit about 10 pawn shops. One right after the other. In one there was a motorcycle in the window. My husband always wanted a motorcycle and we couldn’t afford one. We didn’t even stop to look because it just wasn’t in our budget or a “need”. On to the next pawn shop.

We finally found a working flash to work with my camera. I shot a beautiful wedding that day. The camera performed, the wedding was perfect.

That Monday I called the pawn shop and asked them about the motorcycle in the window. It was an older model, needed some work and they only wanted $400, but that was still way more than we had. So I asked them if I could put it on Lay-a-Way. They let me. I paid on it for months and never told my husband.

One day I paid it off. I had to find a way to get it home. We had a truck, and I told my husband that a single mother at work was moving and I wanted to take the truck and not the car that day to help her out after work. He had just put a used camper shell on it and told me he wasn’t going to take that camper shell off, it was too much work to put on, and he had just cleaned out the bed, so try to keep it clean. I agreed to all of that .

So at lunch at work I took a friend to the pawn shop and we loaded that motorcycle in sideways so we could close the truck bed and camper shell. I had
