Reclaiming (some) worldly values

Both Buddhism and Stoicism imply, if not explicitly advocate, a negative appraisal of our animal nature. The body and bodily matters, as well as common objects of desire such as success and wealth, are downgraded. While neither tradition favours an intransigent ascetic position that demands we renounce basic human needs, both are radical enough to tell us that what we normally find valuable, the goals we normally pursue, the paths we normally take through life, are not as worthwhile as we think.

Mistaken about good and bad, unwittingly taken in by things that are ultimately harmful for us, we suffer from something akin to a perceptual illusion, only much deeper and more problematic. It’s like the Müller-Lyer illusion: we can’t help experiencing the lines as of different length, even if we know they’re not.
