CHAPTER 12

Stunned by her own audacity, Amarie used the back door to enter their kitchen. Thankfully, her mom wasn’t around to ask her questions about why she looked so dazed. Like a zombie, she stumbled up to her bedroom. She closed the door, then flopped weakly onto her bed.

I like you. With three little words, she’d turned Kit’s world upside down. She could still see the shock in his eyes and the frozen stillness in his body. He was likely still in the shed, wondering how to turn her down without ruining their friendship.

“Ugh!” With a groan, she turned to bury her face in her pillow. What the hell was wrong with her? She must’ve gone crazy. Nothing else could explain what she’d just done. After keeping that secret for close to fifteen years, how could she just blurt it out like that?

To be honest, the confession had stunned her too. It wasn’t in the plan. But Kit had been so close to her, and his voice and gaze were so concerned that her brain had shut down.

“What am I going to do?” she mumbled into the pillow.

As if he knew that she was thinking about him, Kit called her right then.

Amarie immediately cut off the call then turned off her phone. If she talked to him now while feeling this way, she’d end up blurting more unnecessary crap.

Oh, this is bad. This is bad, bad, bad. She buried her face in the pillow again as her brain whirred in panic, trying to find a solution. What was she going to do?

After thinking about it for some time, she decided that the only viable solution was to avoid him until she had her emotions firmly in check. When he came to talk, she’d be ready with a fake smile and an ‘I was just joking’.

Yeah, it was a cowardly plan, but it was still the only plan she could think of that wouldn’t lead to the utter downfall of the greatest friendship she’d ever had in her life.

Firmly committed to seeing her cowardly plan through, Amarie pulled the covers over her head and tried to go to sleep. Even so, her dreams were haunted by memories of Kit’s stunned face after her confession. Those memories were interspersed with various scenarios of his reaction in the coming days.

She dreamed that he gave her a disgusted look then demanded never to see her again. She dreamed that he was avoiding her too, going as far as to hide in a bush when he saw her coming. She dreamed that he brought Piper to her house and declared that the two of them were getting back together.

By the time her bedside clock ticked five-thirty a.
