Most certainly Jesus is not the commonplace, ordinary teacher that our easy discipleship implies. Most certainly Jesus commands more than simply our respectful attention and moderate acclaim. Most certainly Jesus is on an altogether different level than any and all of the great names in human history, whether it be a Buddha or a Mohammed or a John the Baptist. While Jesus was on earth proclaiming His ministry, He excited passionate response—for and against, pro and con. To have seen Jesus, to have heard Him, was an experience not soon forgotten; it stayed within one’s soul to torture, to plead, to uproot and unsettle, to create yearnings and moods of penitence as never before.
