Four

Thessalonia, Allegra

“You’re still stressing about the Coalition’s plans to send your friends into the thick of it?” Jane asks after a while.

Matthew looks up at her and sighs. He had fallen silent about an hour ago as he thought, and by now, he was about out of thoughts to think.

Panagakos had answers for him. Marie had answers. Seemingly everyone had answers.

But all of those answers were just ones to his questions, none of them were actual solutions.

What seemed to put the nail in the coffin for Matthew was when Panagakos said that they didn’t have anyone who could change around the scheduled deployments of those who were going out in this new counteroffensive. The cards had been dealt out and all Matthew could seemingly do was peek at a few of the hands that were being held. However, he can’t help but feel like he isn’t sitting at the table to this little card game—it’s like he is only spectating. He feels completely powerless to affect anything right now.

There was, however, one ray of hope I all of this for Matthew.

Panagakos was able to give Matthew some rosters that some militia spies were able to pull about three hours ago. In that time, he was able to spot about half of the people from Crail who had arrived here with him. While it was a far cry short of him saving them all, he now knew that they were still alive.

He also knew where those people were heading.

Interestingly enough, the Coalition seemed to be prioritizing sending manpower out to the fallen cities of Allegra. While there were some missions going elsewhere—mostly to places that didn’t seem to carry any actual importance—the majority of the people being sent out were citybound.

The Coalition seemed to intentionally break up and spread out the people from specific planets as best they could. As such, Matthew can only see one city that was getting as many as three people from Crail sent to it. The other cities were all two or less.

Thessalonia was on the list, and there were two of Matthew’s friends coming here: Tiana Halladay and Emily Gordon.

But that doesn’t do much to give Matthew any hope. According to those same stolen records, the team sent to Thessalonia had arrived about eight hours ago. Thanks to the reality of militia spy networks, no one had any data on what became of that mission.

Essentially, there was no knowing if the mission was successful, failed, ongoing, or over.

In the place of having actual facts, Matthew had theories. Lots and lots of theories. Many of them ended with dreary thoughts of finding his dead friends scattered across the planet and, after however long this war went on, returning home with nothing but apologies to the families who lost their children.

“This is it!” Panagakos says from the front of the line.

“We’re here?” Matthew asks no one in particular. He can’t help but feel relieved, however. At long last, he is finally going to be able to get some answers.
