Mutual Understanding

Emma and Frank sat in silence together, fingers lightly entwined as they gazed at the panoramic view before them. They had traveled all over the world, but his was their favourite spot. Early rain had greened all, giving the landscape a fresh and fertile appearance. There was always something new to see and today was no exception. Their car was parked as close as it could be to the edge of the cliff, as they drank in the beauty of what had always been their own special place.

“It’s lovely isn’t it, John?” Emma snuggled up closer as she spoke.

“It sure is! But it’s changed a lot hasn’t it?” John proceeded to point out notable changes since their last visit.

“Everything changes, love,” she told him. “You know that.”

“It sure does,” he agreed. “It sure does.”

A silence followed as their eyes devoured the visual feast before them.

Emma turned toward her husband. “Do you think the kids will be all right, John?”

“I think so,” John answered without meeting her eyes. “They’ve managed so far and we haven’t disowned them have we?”

Emma’s eyes twinkled as the memories came flooding through her mind. How handsome John had looked that first time she had seen him running onto the football field. He played on the same team as her brother. She smiled as she remembered how nervous he was when he had asked her if she would come to the local dance with him. He had won her mother’s heart with the flowers he had brought for her when he came to dinner.

In the driver’s seat beside her John’s thoughts were meandering back in time also. He had loved going fishing with his dad when he was a boy and even now he missed those days on the river. He liked to think his father would have been proud of the way he had lived his life. God knows he had tried. He remembered the butterflies in his stomach as he had lined up that last kick of the ‘48 Grand Final and sent the ball straight through the centre of the goal posts to claim a victory for his team. What a moment! Then there was that moment when he first kissed Emma. He shivered with pleasure at the thought. He knew now that true love does indeed last forever. But other things slip away. He sighed as he reached out and gripped Emma’s hand tighter. They lost themselves deep in each other’s eyes, savouring their love for one another. But also searching for signs of doubt or regret of the decision they had made. They found none!

“Mandy will find the note, won’t she?” Emma asked. “She should get it when she goes to feed Princess on Monday … Maybe I should have brought princess?”

“You and that stupid cat, Emma.” John responded, shaking his head in feigned disbelief.

“Oh, and I suppose you’ll tell me next you hated Princess sleeping on your lap?”

Knowing it was pointless pretending any longer that he disliked the cat, the old man winked at her, saying, “Princess will be looked after dear, I am sure of it.
