CHAPTER 10

Blue grabbed Ky’s hand after they’d both crawled out of the truck. Ky was hesitant. Blue suspected it was a combination of beast-aftershocks, public affection, and just plain nerves about the whole situation. The last thing he wanted was Ky nervous about what they were doing. But Blue had no qualms about asking, so he did.

He dragged Ky a little closer, aware of the fleeting glances he was trying to conceal. Blue squeezed his fingers, then let go.

“I don’t want to ask you if you’re sure about this because there’s no surety about anything we’re doing,” he said, as some taut thread of hope zinged inside him.

He scuffed his boot in the dirt, chin tucked to his chest as he gauged Ky’s breathing. Fairly normal, at least considering the situation. When he looked up again, Ky had crossed his arms over his chest. “But if you want to talk about it more, we’ve got time. I mean, it’s two weeks until the next half-moon, or if you’d prefer, you can go and let me know later what you’ve decided…or not.”

Ky replied with a hushed voice and feigned grin. “You seemed pretty confident when we left my place. Not bailing, are you?”

The response wasn’t at all what Blue had expected—it was far, fucking better. Ky stared at Blue in amusement, one side of his mouth quirked up. Blue was definitely being teased, but in a most charming way.

And he was certainly charmed.

“You just look nervous. Not even sure that’s the right word,” he said, shoving his hands in his pockets as he rocked back on his heels. “Is it the place, the tattoo, or just plain me?”

The curve of Ky’s lips shifted, widening above the cleft in his chin. It was a good look, far better than the one of indifference he’d been wearing in the truck.

Ky moved closer. “You held my hand.”

The way he said it without the quiver in his voice, maintaining the determined eye contact like he hadn’t done since they’d left his place, made Blue curious. It could have been a trap or a trick, something to throw Blue off or simply reel him in. Of course, Blue stepped into it both feet first.

“I did. I take it that was wrong?”

A barely there shrug accompanied Ky’s words, most likely meant as a show of indifference, but it spoke volumes to Blue.

“‘S’never happened to me before.”

Blue’s smile quivered under the pressure. Why was he feeling just as much anxiety and apprehension as Ky was giving off? Blue didn’t get anxious. Never. Until now. “Is that good or bad?”

“I’m not sure,” Ky admitted.

Ky slid even closer, barely a foot distance between their faces now, as he looked at Blue. There was seemingly little room to breathe, and Blue thought he might have stopped altogether as they continued to gaze at each other. And though Blue’s insides swirled uncomfortably, he felt an enthusiasm that left him weak. It was as if Ky had physically tickled the tip of his heart and spread warmth throughout his body.
