Chapter Fourteen

Jade

The following day at the dig site I’m dragging my butt from lack of sleep, and Professor Keller is preying on my weakness. He’s been a nightmare. For the past few days he has been more ornery than usual, kicking two students off the site. One of the students wasn’t even on our team. I wonder if his bad mood has anything to do with the missing artifacts. I’m currently looking through all the pots and vases for the specific wedding vase from earlier this week.

“What are you doing?”

I gasp, turning around and placing my hand over my racing heart when I see a tall figure standing in the entry of the tent. The sun behind them casts a shadow that makes it hard for me to identify who it is. The figure steps further into the tent, the flap of the tent falling closed behind them. As my eyes adjust back to the dim lighting, I see a thin woman with blonde hair tied tightly in a high ponytail. Remembering her name is Sara, I drop my hand from my chest.

“I was looking for a particular artifact. A wedding vase, maybe you’ve seen it?”

“Hmm...does it have two birds on it?”

“Yes! That’s the one!”

“I think I saw it in Professor Keller’s tent the other day.”

“Oh well, maybe he saw my email about the weird picture that was documented. Thanks for your help!” I tell Sara as I walk past her. Heading back to my station, I see that Alfie is standing with his arms crossed outside the tent.

“Waiting for me?” I ask him teasingly.

“Always,” he says, winking at me.

“Well, you don’t have to worry anymore, I’m here now.”

His eyes scan my body, giving me an assessing look. “What’s that look for?” I ask him.

“You just seem different today.”

The odd tone of his voice causes my eyebrows to furrow. “Different, how?”

“More sassy, like you’re letting the true you out. Whatever has caused this change, keep doing it. I like seeing you this way.”

Images of my date with Liam last night as he ate me out flashes through my mind, making me blush. This causes Alfie to laugh. “I love how you blush so easily. I hope that’s something that never changes about you, Jade.”

His words cause my blush to deepen. Alfie gives me a teasing smirk and tugs me into the spot between his widespread legs. I breathe in his clean earthy scent and feel his steady heartbeat with my hands resting on his chest. There’s something calming to me about his strong, solid presence, giving me a bit of confidence to tell him about Liam and Owen.

“Alfie, I’ve been wanting to tell you about…”

“Get back to work you two, or you’ll be the next useless meat bags I kick off my site!” Professor Keller yells. The deep tone of voice, tightness in his eyes, and the curl in his upper lip, makes me take a step into Alfie.

A growl vibrates from Alfie’s chest and he tilts my head up with the tip of his finger.
