“It’s not too late to call off sick. Maybe we could try again in a decade,” Dion said, sweat dripping off him as we piled into the car ready for lunch with his family.

“It’s going to be fine,” I assured him, gripping his clammy hand. “This is why we came out here. We’ll get through today, then start planning the future of the vineyard. I promise, it’ll be okay. If they get too much, we’ll sneak out and play hide the corkscrew in between the vines.”

Dion snorted.

“Can I play?” Newt asked.

“Not a chance. Come on, it’s time to shift,” Ren growled. The duo shifted into their fire salamander forms and perched on the dashboard as Colbie slid into the driver’s seat.

We’d discussed transport options earlier in the day and decided that given the unpredictability of Dion’s family, arriving and leaving in one vehicle would be best, which meant seating six people in Ren’s not-so-adult-sized car. With Ren and Newt in their fire salamander forms the ride was more comfortable, and we all agreed that Colbie was the best option to drive despite Tase’s protests that he could handle the job.

Visions of him taking offense to someone on the winding road up to the vineyard and steering us all toward an early death haunted me as I gently reminded him that his whole herd was in the same car.

Our compromise was letting him sit shotgun with Ren and Newt’s clothing in his lap.

“It’s a sharp right onto the dirt road up ahead,” Dion called to Colbie as the car picked up speed on the gentle slope.

Colbie nodded and made the turn smoothly.

Lush green vines in neat rows flashed past as we ascended toward a large house with a curved driveway out front. Three levels of windows peered down at us from the red brick façade, each glass pane framed with cute white washed shutters. A black iron railing perched on the roof like a crown, the widow’s walk a perfect position to see the entire property. I quietly made a mental note to ask Dion for a tour up there later.

“Jeezus,” Colbie screamed. We all lurched forward, little Ren salamander slapping against the windscreen, as she threw on the brakes.

“What was that?”

I sat forward. The road in front of us was clear, the dust kicked up from our tires settling behind us. Ren chirped indignantly as he shook his tiny black and yellow head, resituating himself on the dash and checking in with Newt as Colbie craned her head, searching the row of vines beside us with a hand pressed to her heart.

“Let’s just get this done. If anything else runs out in front of us, don’t stop,” Dion grumbled.

Colbie’s head snapped toward us, Dion’s callous words so out of character that we were both taken aback. Since I was the last person that should make plans and it was Dion’s family, I shrugged at her, nodding toward the house. With a crunch of tires, we rolled on at a pace that even I could outrun.
