The drive to my parent's cabin takes most of the day. Sometimes I forget how long it can take to get places when driving.

Carine spends a lot of the time silent, staring out the windows at the changing Texas landscape. I can’t imagine what it’s like for her and what she must be feeling. This has been my entire life.

We pull onto the private road that leads to the house. I stop at the gate and enter the pin code and the gate slides open. Inside is a drastic difference from the outside. The perimeter acres have been planted with a variety of trees and plants and a sprinkler system has been put in place to keep the area lush and forest-like for the pack's use. Wolves are happiest when we can run free in the forest.

"I don't know what I was expecting when you said cabin in El Paso, but it wasn't this. The house and land are beautiful.”

This piece of land has been in my parent's possession for years. Once it was just land and a small cabin. Over time they added to it as advances were made and towns began to grow nearby. We’ve just continued to call it the cabin, even though now it's a sprawling, five-bedroom house with lots of windowed walls to see out into the woods surrounding it.

“It is. I think you’ll find it comforting during your first change.”

“It’s amazing. Tell me about your parents. What are they like? What was it like growing up as a wolf?”

“They live life on their property much like they did when I was a boy, except for the additions of modern conveniences. I do think wolf life is easier when we are young in so many ways. I was also raised when the world was a very different place. My mother is great. My father and I are still working on our dynamic, as both of us are alphas.” We aren’t hostile toward each other or anything but we’ve had our share of arguments and my mother hates it. I tend to avoid topics that may cause conflict with him.

“Do you think they’ll like me?” She chews on her lower lip.

“They will love you.”

“They won’t care I wasn’t born a wolf and know nothing about this life?”

“You'll learn, and no they won't care. They aren’t like that.” There are some wolves who live differently, don't mingle with human society, and they tend to be a little more wild. The alphas treat their packs differently and they tend to take on many mates and don’t allow the others in their pack to have relationships. It just makes them more hostile and unpredictable. These are the wolves I want to keep her far away from. Even if she ever did decide she didn’t want to be with me or a part of my pack. I would never let them get their hands on her.

“I can’t wait to meet them.” She lays her head down on my lap and curls up on the couch.
