SEVEN

I had a strange dream that night. Only part of it I managed to remember, a sky bright with stars, the constellations half familiar. Screams, a voice broken raw and struggling to be heard. Through the darkness, feathers rustled and moved the air, and warmth sang over my skin.

It reminded me of Soyer’s phoenix tattoo, feathers against skin. The darkness came alight, a small glimmer ruffling feathers, illuminating a smooth beak, and bringing bright eyes to life. Then the firebird spread his majestic wings, and all of a sudden, the stars were no longer the brightest things in the sky. The phoenix took flight, and it set the night on fire, but I wasn’t afraid of the heat. I knew I’d never get burned.

And that, that I would never get burned, was what stuck with me most. I couldn’t remember any more details, whose screams I had heard or where the dream had taken place, but I did remember that fire couldn’t touch me.

I stretched in the unfamiliar bed, relaxed and perfectly at ease even though the dream had been weird, maybe even uncomfortable.

“Soyer?” I said into the darkness. It wasn’t complete darkness though, and I saw light behind what I recognized as the sliding door design of the upstairs rooms of his loft. I hadn’t even noticed that they divided his bedroom off from the rest of the space.

I strained my ears but heard nothing. Then again, the apartment was big, and my voice had been muffled with sleep. I sat up and crawled to the edge of the large bed. My chest was sticky with dried cum, and I wrinkled my nose. Then I grinned into the darkness, just feeling…happy. Light.

I slid the wall aside. It had to be around noon. The curtains let in the bright sunshine through the downstairs windows while those on the upstairs level remained opaque. That was considerate, and I wanted to go find Soyer and thank him. I wanted to hug him. I wanted to know if he would be as solid as he had been last night, a need that surprised me in how strong it was.

But I was butt naked and in need of a shower, and I wasn’t going to investigate the downstairs like that. I turned around to locate the loaned pajamas but found that Soyer had left a bathrobe on the end of the bed instead, not the kind of warm and fluffy thing I liked, but the more functional one made of thinner material.

I slipped it on and walked down the spiral staircase on bare feet. I looked around, and on the kitchen counter, I saw a thermos and a cream envelope with “Amory” on it written in Soyer’s handwriting.

My heart sank, and I walked over there and grabbed the envelope. It wasn’t sealed, and I pulled out the note.

Amory,

Forgive me, but something came up, and I had to leave. I wanted to kiss you good-bye, but you were sound asleep. I made you coffee, and you are welcome to anything in the fridge.
