Because she felt her husband couldnât be trusted to watch the baby, Connie hired Ingridâs daughter, Sonja, to babysit for the few hours a week she was at work at the drugstore. A recent high-school graduate, Sonja was a good-natured, cheerful girl, similar to Ingrid in personality. But unlike her petite, plump mother, Sonja stood tall, rawboned, and awkward, with an unruly shock of blond hair that seemed to go every which way in spite of her halfhearted attempts to tame it with an oversize barrette. Her skin bore the angry red marks of adolescent acne. Ingrid had confided to Connie that the girl lacked confidence. But when Ingrid brought her over to meet the Sutherlands, Sonja took to Scotty immediately, holding him tenderly and cooing over him. Based on the smiles he offered, he liked her, too.
âYou donât have to worry about a thing, Mrs. Sutherland,â Sonja said as she rocked Scotty in her arms. âI grew up helping to care for my younger brothers. I know all about babies.â
âA stern caretaker, too, she can be, when the situation calls for it,â Ingrid added, smiling with pride at her daughter.
âWell, thatâs wonderful, Sonja,â Connie said warmly. âIâm sorry that I canât afford to hire you for more than a few hours a week. Thatâs as far as my wages will stretch. But I canât afford not to hire you, either. My husband is ⦠well, heâs too preoccupied with other concerns to take adequate care of the baby.â
âOh, we women are better with the babies, anyway,â Ingrid asserted with a dismissive wave of her hand. âMen are all thumbs when it comes to the little ones.â
Connie directed her smile at Sonja. âYouâll take your meals with us, of course, whenever youâre working. And youâre welcome to raid the icebox anytime for whatever you may find there. Maybe over time we can figure out some other way to boost your compensation. â
âThatâs all right, Mrs. Sutherland,â the girl said. âMy mother tells me you are a wonderful woman to work for, and that means a lot. Iâm happy to take care of little Scotty.â
Connie felt herself blush and cast a grateful glance at Ingrid.
âIs true,â the older woman said kindly. âI wouldnât have said it if it wasnât true.â
IT TOOK Connie a little while to learn the ropes of working in the drugstore, but soon Mr. Dornbusch was trusting her to know her way around the shop and help customers find what they were looking for. After a couple of weeks, he even left her in charge for short stints while he ran an errand or went home for lunch.
âI suppose itâs not bad to have some help,â he admitted grudgingly after the first week, âbut donât go changing things around too much. Thereâs no room in the budget for useless frippery.â
When she wasnât helping customers, Connie turned her decorative eye to sprucing up the product displays. First she stripped each shelf of its inventory and gave it a good scrubbing, then polished each box, bottle, and jar before placing them back in neat rows.
