BACKPACKING
The only way to stay in the park overnight is if youâre backpacking and camping in the backcountry. You can watch the sunrise and sunset smear color across the sparkling sand. With orange trail markers, the Backcountry Camping Trail (2 mi/3.2 km rt, 2 hrs, moderate) climbs several steep dunes to reach the 10 primitive campsites among the white gypsum with no shade, toilets, or water. Though the trail is short, it will take more time to hike due to the loose sand. Plan to bring a tent, 1 gallon (3.8 l) of water per person per day, and a landfill-safe toilet bag. Pick up first-come, first-served permits ($10) at the visitors center. The trailhead is 6 miles (9.7 km) north on Dunes Drive and has a vault toilet.
