• Older kids and teens may enjoy getting on bikes and pedaling around the city or to Parco delle Cascine (Piazzale delle Cascine, free) where local families cool off in the Olympic-size pool.

• For budding scientists there’s the Museo di Storia Naturale (Via Romana 17, tel. 055/275-6444, Jun.-Sept. Tues.-Sun. 10:30am-5:30pm, Oct.-May Tues.-Sun. 9:30am-4:30pm, €6 adults, €3 6-14 year olds, under 5 free), which is rarely crowded and home to an extensive and surprisingly detailed anatomy collection.

• Markets are enjoyable for all ages and a good place to put allowance money to use. And there’s nothing like gelato to bring a family together.

• Temper tantrum? Head to the nearest newsstand. Most kiosks have several racks filled with small toys, collectibles, playing cards, and gadgets that offer instant distraction.

• Consider allowing older teenagers to spend a couple of hours on their own. Florence is one of the safest cities in Italy and exploring it alone is an experience they’ll never forget.
