Fashion didn’t come easy to Rosie. It was one of the side effects of living in a house full of men. She thought she had nice clothes, but she knew her attire didn’t match what the other girls at school wore. Martha was no help, stalking around in something akin to a muumuu most of the time.

Most days, Rosie wore a pair of jeans and a T-shirt—classic, basic. In the frigid winter months, she added a hoodie or a sweater to her daily attire. Nothing was better than the feel of an oversized sweater on a cold day. During the hot summer months, shorts and a T-shirt or tank top were typical—timeless and easy.

Rosie growled under her breath as she went through her closet for the tenth time in the last hour. Trying to find something to wear to the party had her stumped. She glanced at the clock, noting she had about a half hour before her father dropped her off at Becca’s house. She planned to get a ride to the party with Becca after hanging out at her place for a bit. Sam was using the Explorer for his date, but he’d agreed to drop Lucas off at the party and drive them both home later.

Finally making a decision, she chose a plain black spaghetti-strap dress that hung to just above her knees. She put some mousse in her hair to make the curls look fluffy and soft as they hung over her shoulders and draped down her back. After dabbing on a little perfume, she chose a gold bracelet and necklace.

Checking herself over in the mirror, she realized the dress was short enough to show the wound on her leg. Sighing, she rummaged around in her dresser until she found a pair of black tights to wear underneath. She had just shimmied herself into them when she heard a soft knock on her door. Assuming it was her father, Rosie called to him to come in. The door opened, and she turned to see Lucas staring at her.

His brown hair hung loosely on top of his head, like he’d run his hands through it, not bothering with a comb, and called it good enough. That was just his way, but she loved that about him. Her heart swelled, and she had a sudden urge to forget the party and stay home and watch a movie with him. His lips parted slightly, and a desire ran through her that felt right and wrong all at once. She shook her head.

Stop it. It’s Lucas.

She averted her stare nervously. “I thought you were my dad.” Her stomach fluttered as she felt his stare linger for a few moments before he spoke.

“Um, I just wanted to catch you before you left. Sam said he’s taking Heather to dinner and to text him when we’re ready to leave the party…”

He trailed off, and Rosie nodded slowly.

“Okay,” she said. “That’s cool with me if it works for you.”

“Yeah… yeah…” Lucas trailed off again.
