Thomas Edison’s Birthplace

Famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison—responsible for game-changing devices such as the lightbulb and motion picture camera—was born in tiny Milan on February 11, 1847. He only spent the first seven years of his life here before his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan, where Edison grew up. Milan operates the Thomas A. Edison Birthplace Museum (9 N. Edison Dr., 419/499-2135, tomedison.org, 10am-5pm Tues.-Sat., 1pm-5pm Sun., $15 adults, $10 seniors and children) in the modest brick house of the Edison family, who donated era-appropriate furnishings; the house looks much as it would have while Edison lived there. You’ll also find early versions of many of Edison’s inventions.
