CAMPING

Tagourart Ain Karma

Just a couple of kilometers toward Meknes off the main road is a free campsite with wonderful views, a popular stop for travelers, caravaners from Europe, and pilgrims making their way to Moulay Idriss. Though the camping is free, showers will set you back 10Dh, and there is very little infrastructure here.

AZROU

ازرو

Though plenty of tourists make their way to Azrou, the city has maintained its sense of authenticity and literally circles around the town namesake: the central, crowned azrou (the Tashelhit word for “rock”), an imposing outcropping of rock that sits astride the old medina and the Ville Nouvelle just below the Grand Mosque. The small medina is easily navigable and the town boasts a large Tuesday souk, one of the more popular in the region. Most travelers will likely spend most of their time around Place Mohammed V. Shops and cafés line the square, making it a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours writing postcards, talking with friends, or reading a book. On the plaza you can also find ATMs (Banque Populaire and BMCE).

Azrou is the place to buy souvenirs. The prices are much lower than you will find elsewhere, and the shopkeepers are generally more honest, though haggling is still sometimes necessary.

For most hikers and nature lovers, Azrou is where they make their home base. From here, many trails wind through the surrounding cedar forest. You can check in with the famous Barbary macaques, shuffle down limestone cliffs and across pastures of calendula, poppies, and flax, and find the occasional orchid.
