Getting There and Around

To reach Puerto Octay from Puerto Varas by car, it’s a 50-km, 45-minute drive north on Ruta 5, turning at the junction for Frutillar. From Frutillar it’s a 25-km, 30-minute drive around the north shore of the lake, with pretty views among the trees.

Drive to Puerto Octay from Frutillar on the paved U-55 from Frutillar Alto, a 25-km, 20-minute trip, or on the more scenic compacted-gravel road north from Frutillar Bajo that runs along the shore of Lake Llanquihue, which adds 2km and 10 minutes to the drive time.

Via Octay (tel. 64/2237 043) runs buses every 20 minutes from Osorno (1hr, CH$1,500) to Puerto Octay’s Terminal de Buses (La Esperanca and Balmaceda), half a block south of the Plaza de Armas. In summer, the bus continues on to the Península Centinela. From Puerto Montt (1.25hr, CH$2,000), Thaebus (tel. 65/2263 019) runs five buses daily.

The town is compact enough to walk; Playa Centinela is 3km from Puerto Octay along the main road.
