Taco Stands and Antojitos

Locals, tourists, Americans, Mexicans—everyone in Loreto eventually finds their way to S Asadero Super Burro (Francisco Fernández, tel. 613/135-1243, 5:30pm-midnight Thurs.-Tues., US$6-9). The casual spot offers large portions, delicious food, affordable prices, friendly staff, and a fun atmosphere. It’s known for its large arrachera meat burros (large burritos). Equally good are the papas rellenas—potatoes stuffed with meat, vegetables, and cheese.

With a colorful and inviting setting under a casual palapa, Almejas Concho (tel. 615/135-1452, 11am-9pm daily, US$5-9) serves delicious ceviche and seafood cocktails. The specialties here are the chocolate clams and the almejas gratinadas (clams au gratin), grilled and stuffed with cheese, shrimp, and salsa.

For fish tacos, head to the popular El Rey del Taco (Benito Juárez, no tel., 9am-2pm, US$2-6). In addition to fish tacos, it has carne asada and cabeza. All the usual taco toppings are arrayed for you to make your own tasty treat. You can order from the window that faces out onto the street or sit down inside. It closes down around 2pm or whenever the food runs out, so go early.

The paletas at La Michoacana (Madero at Juárez, tel. 613/135-0549) are a favorite treat to satisfy a sweet tooth when the weather is warm.
