Chapter 16

Jim closed the stable door behind him and fitted the latch into its place. He let out a long breath.

“You’re tired,” Josie remarked.

“Who isn’t?” he asked.

She didn’t answer. She moved in next to him and slid her hand into the crook of his arm.

His eyes widened, but he didn’t say anything. She steered him toward the house. “Come inside and sit down for supper.”

He let her take him inside. She sat him down at the table and took off his hat for him. Then she went to the stove and stirred the pot.

She glanced over her shoulder and spied him staring into space. “What are you thinking about?”

“Not much,” he replied. “I was just thinking about the cattle. I still haven’t figured out how I’m going to get them to town in the fall.”

“Are you still thinking of making up with Jason?” she asked.

He shrugged. “I don’t know how I’d do that. I guess he won’t have anything to do with me now.”

Josie chuckled. “Things haven’t exactly gone according to plan since you showed up here.”

“I guess I made my bed and now I have to lie in it.” He let out a long, tortured breath.

Josie regarded him from the stove. He even looked different to her, now that she knew the truth about him. She put the lid on the pot, set down her wooden spoon, and crossed the room to his chair. She laid her hand on his shoulder. “They just don’t understand.”

He raised his head and peered into her eyes. For the first time, she saw the bloodshot fatigue in his eyes and the exhausted wrinkles on his forehead. “What happened to you? Something changed in you today. You never gave me a sideways glance before.”

She smiled down at him. “Never mind about that. All that matters is that we’re here together. Whatever happens to us, we’ll face it together.”

His eyes glistened with moisture, and his eyebrows went up in the middle. She never saw any uncertainty or vulnerability in him before. Then again, she never looked for it. She was too busy seeing the anger and the menace.

“Do you think there’s any way to make up with them now?” he asked.

Josie shrugged. “Maybe not, not after....” She broke off. Neither spoke the words, but they both knew Jason and Katie would never forget about Jim killing Flash.

He nodded and looked back down at the table. “I see. I think you’re probably right.”

She pulled at his shoulder with her hand until he faced her again. Then she put both her hands on his shoulders. “We’re in a mess. I won’t lie to you about that. There’s no way we can run the ranch by ourselves. But we might just find a way to get out of this without losing our pants in the process.”

He gazed up into her eyes. He must be seeing her for the first time, too. Maybe he only ever saw a mouse cowering before him while he was prowling around like a lion.
