Chapter Thirteen

MIA DIDN’T LIKE the way Caden went quiet on her in the ambulance. He held her hand, his fingers softly brushing her palm, but he kept his gaze locked on his shoes, his head bowed. Even in his wrinkled dark gray suit, his shirt smeared with blood, his hair disheveled, and his face haggard from the long night, he was still the most handsome man she’d ever seen.

“I thought guys hated carrying girls’ purses.”

Caden glanced her way, then let his gaze fall back to his feet. “One of the agents found it at the restaurant.” He set her beaded bag on the blanket between her legs along with the box of chocolates.

“Well, at least I won’t have to get a new driver’s license. I hate standing in line.”

Still nothing.

She squeezed his hand. “Caden. You did what you had to do to save me. Killing Marco couldn’t have been easy, but it was the right thing, the only thing you could do to get us out of there alive.”

“You think that now, but once you’ve had time to process what happened . . . ”

“I’ll know and always believe that you saved my life.”

Caden pressed the heel of his hand to his mouth, his fingers along his jaw, and stared at her. “I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to you.” His gaze raked over her bruised, cut, and aching body, then he looked away again, his eyes filled with regret.

He thought this was all his fault. She didn’t believe that. Saying so now wouldn’t convince him. He needed time. They both did. Once things settled down, they’d talk and clear the air.

She wanted to say more, but they pulled into the hospital, and the back doors flew open, medical personnel there to take care of her.

Caden jumped out ahead of the paramedic. They wheeled her into the emergency room and closed her in one of the bays, where doctors and nurses took her vitals, poked, prodded, x-rayed, stitched her up, did some minor surgery on her shoulder, and everything else they could think of for God knows how long. All the while she wished to have Caden beside her.

They finally settled her into a room, the IV dripping fluids and blessed drugs to take away the pain she didn’t want to feel anymore. The only thing she wanted was to hold Caden’s hand again, feel his warmth seep into her, know that she was safe and protected even though the threat had ended. The fear still echoed through her, but it would ease once she saw his smile, the one he gave her at dinner before everything went wrong. But one thing remained so right: her and him together.
