Chapter 8

I’d hoped that time would have passed quicker, but maybe I should have known better.

Despite Sigrid’s words and the knowledge that maybe time in Argent wasn’t passing as quickly, I still worried about my loved ones. And I knew I wasn’t the only one. More than once, Mara held me tight against her frame at night, and if our eyes met, I could see the doubts in her orbs.

We kept to the plan, though.

We had one chance to get what we wanted, one chance to win, and we couldn’t take risks with it. Sigrid was right. For us to get our victory, we needed Mara at full strength, which meant we needed to wait until she gave birth to our child.

It still took some getting used to.

Mara’s best guess was that it would take her around four months until she gave birth, and that seemed like an eternity with everything that was going on.

Staying idle would make it an even worse wait, so I had to find ways to entertain myself. We all did.

Well, I wasn’t being fair if I called it entertainment. It was more a matter of putting our free time to good use. Mara spent a lot of time studying the ritual that she already knew, trying to figure out more information about it, hoping she might get some realization that would make it unnecessary for us to attack the devourer’s lair.

Sigrid tried to help the blonde as she could and was busy gathering supplies outside of that.

I trained like I did when I got to Argent, devoting most of my attention to it. Over the years, the need to improve myself had waned a little, and between my lovers and my children, I saw myself easing a bit on the training. It hadn’t seemed needed.

Now, with the knowledge of what might come our way? Any improvement I could make mattered, even if it might not be enough in the end.

That wasn’t all we did, obviously. We made plans as well. Sigrid told us what she knew about our enemies’ dungeon, what she remembered of it, and about the other types of devourers that could cross our path when we went on the offensive. When the time came, we would have to scout the place, but that wasn’t something we could do yet. It would take us weeks of travel to get there, which wasn’t something we could easily commit to right now. It also risked alerting the devourers to our plans.

Better to leave that for later.

With some luck, we might be able to shorten those weeks into hours if we dared fly on Amaranth’s back when the time came.

There would be risks, like the fact that the devourers would easily see us come unless we flew really high, though perhaps we could try to poise down close to their position and walk the rest of the way. It would be a problem for another time. One that we would have months to think about.

Besides that, we could start working on possible attack plans, though the details would have to be left for later.
