Harper says nothing after we exit the dorm room as she powerwalks down a wide, lantern-lit hallway, the floor paved with cobblestone. At first, I think sheâs not going to talk to me, that maybe her rescuing me was solely because Jude told her to. How did he even know I needed rescued?
âOkay.â Harper suddenly slows her pace, letting an exhale ease from her lips. âI think weâre in the clear now.â
My boots scuff against the floor as I move up to walk beside her. âThe clear of what?â
âOf them deciding to come after us,â she clarifies, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
âYou were worried they would?â I ask. âBecause you seemed so confident they wouldnât.â
She laughs, shaking her head. âYeah, I totally faked it. Had to, or theyâd destroy me.â She loops her arm through mine, totally throwing me off. Itâs been a long timeâokay, neverâsince anyone has just given me a friendly touch. âThe thing with my brother and his friends is that they feed off peopleâs fears. So, if you donât show them any fear, it not only throws them off, but it takes the fun out of their tormenting.â
âWhy are they like that?â I wonder, a thousand questions burning at the tip of my tongue.
âThere are a lot of reasons,â she tells me. âAnd honestly, I donât even know all of them. But the biggest one is death.â
âDeath?â Okay, that so wasnât what I thought she was going to say.
She nods, giving me a sidelong glance. âThey used to be really sweetâmy brother and his friendsâbut, when we were all around twelve or so, they all lost someone close to them. Ollie lost his friend, Emilia, in a tragic accident. Phoenix lost his mother. And Roman ⦠he lost his brother. After that, they became ⦠well, awful.â
âOh.â I feel a bit of sympathy for them, and Iâm not even sure why.
After what they just did to me, I should hate them, right? And I still do. But that doesnât mean I canât feel sorry for them, too.
While Iâve never met my parents, Iâve always felt the pain of not having them in my life.
Lonely.
Aching.
Broken.
Thatâs how I feel when I think about them.
âAnywayââshe tugs me to the right as the hallway splits into a forkââIâm just glad I got there before they ended up doing something irreversible to you.â
âMe, too,â I agree then pause, wondering how much to tell her. I mean, I have no clue why Jude sent her to get me, unless he somehow knew the death triplets would do what they did to me. âThey were going to take me to the Cave of Doom ⦠whatever that is.â
Her eyes widen as her gaze darts to me. âSeriously?â
âThatâs what they said.â
âI canât believe it,â she mutters in astonishment.
Iâm not sure why sheâs so shocked. After all, she basically told me the death triplets are awful.
âAfter what happened to Emilia â¦â She shakes her head repeatedly, anger biting in her expression. âI canât believe Ollie would even consider doing that to anyone.
