Chapter Twelve
Keith pulled on the fence as Tripp secured it to the pole. Sweat trailed down his forehead, heading for his eyes. He couldnât wipe it away with his shirt because he couldnât let go of the fence. It was going to fall into his eye. When Tripp stepped back, Keith quickly wiped it away in the nick of time.
âOnly three more fence posts to go, and all weâll have left to do is hang that second gate.â Evidently Tripp was feeling much better about the fence.
âSounds good to me. Iâm already worn out, and itâs only been about thirty minutes since we got out here.â
âYouâre still worn out from last night.â Tripp chuckled.
âAnd youâre not? Who was it that we had to coax out of bed this morning?â
âScrew you.â
Keith laughed. âMan, I think Iâm falling in love with her. Sheâs everything in a woman I could ever want.â
Tripp was quiet for a few minutes as he tied off another strand of fencing. Then he stopped and wiped the sweat from his forehead on the back of his sleeve.
âI love her, man. Iâm just scared weâre going to lose her.â
âWhy would you think that?â
âItâs too fucking dangerous out here for her. You said it yourself. Keeping her safe is the most important thing we have to do, but we have to work every day.â
âSheâs going to be fine with this fence and her being able to shoot a gun.â
âI hope youâre right. Itâs going to kill me if something happens to her.â
âYou think it wonât do the same to me?â Keith got a little pissed off that Tripp thought he didnât care about her just as much. Hell, heâd just confessed that he was falling in love with her.
âI know. Sorry. This has me too screwed up to think straight. Letâs finish this thing so we can be with her before we have to leave her alone.â
Keith huffed out a breath and looked around. He didnât see anything lurking around, but he felt like something was watching them. The rifle was within easy reach. He pulled the fencing tight with the pullers and held it there as Tripp secured it.
Finally, they reached the gate and worked on it until theyâd cussed enough to get it on and working smoothly. Keith held up his hand for a high five with Tripp.
âWhoohoo! Got that son of a bitch done. Letâs go inside.â
Keith followed the other man to the kitchen door. They stomped off their boots at the back door then stepped out of them to keep from tracking the dirt into the house. They had only been inside a few seconds when Piper came running into the room with a grin on her face. He loved seeing her happy to see them. He wanted to come home to that every day. He would do his best to always leave her smiling so he could come home to the same sight.
âYouâre back! Is it done?â
âAll done, baby. Promise me, though, that you wonât go out except to tend to the garden.
