“Gary, I’m coming out with you for a minute.”

David needed to know how Gary felt about the situation.

“Sure.” He opened the door and stepped outside as David pulled on his coat and joined him. “What’s wrong?”

“Have you really thought this through?”

“Yeah, I think that’s what’s wrong. It makes sense.”

“Have you thought about that we won’t know who the baby’s father is?”

Gary looked at him, a hard expression on his face.

“Are you saying it matters to you?”

“No, I’m just wondering if it’s going to be a problem between us, because if it is, April is the one who’s going to suffer. I don’t want to see her any more upset than she already is.”

“I’m okay with it, David. The baby will belong to all three of us. I won’t care if it even turns out to look like you. It will still be a part of April. She’s ours, David.”

David breathed out a sigh of relief. He hadn’t wanted there to be a rift between them. Not just for his sake, but more for April’s.

“We’re good then?”

“We’re fine, David. I better go. I’ll be back as early as I can.”

“I’ll try to have something decent to eat.”

Gary just laughed and headed for the barn. David walked back in the house and took off his coat. He headed for the fireplace to warm up. He smiled when he noticed that April was asleep. He hoped she felt better when she woke up. Seeing her sick earlier had made him sick inside.

After a few minutes of warming by the fire, he returned to the kitchen to figure out what to fix for dinner. His repertoire was limited. Finally he decided on chili. He could make it early and let it simmer all afternoon if need be.

Once the chili was on the stove on low, David returned to the living room to check on April. She was sitting up on the couch.

“How do you feel?”

“I feel fine. I seem to do better in the afternoons. I guess that would go along with being pregnant.” She frowned.

“David?”

“Yeah?”

“Are you okay with my being pregnant? I mean does it matter to you that, um, we might not know who the father is?”

“I’m fine with it, baby. Don’t worry about it at all. You just concentrate on eating and feeling better. Let me worry about the rest.”

He sat down with her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. She leaned her head on his. Right then, it felt like the best thing in the world to him.

“I need to go upstairs to the bathroom. I’ll be back down in a few minutes.”

“I’ll take you. I don’t want you to get dizzy on the stairs and fall.”

“That’s fine, but you can’t carry me. I need to move around or I’m going to get sore.”

David followed her up the stairs, making sure she didn’t fall. Then he left her in the bathroom with the promise that she wouldn’t go back downstairs alone. After checking on the chili, he poured a glass of water for April and went back up to check on her.
