SONNY

I stared down at Richie, who was on his hands and knees at the doggy door—or that’s what Val called it. It was really for stealth emergency entrance and exit, in case the building was ever taken hostage, though it obviously wasn’t stealth enough considering that my ex-boyfriend had just appeared through it, his ass beautifully displayed by the stretchy yoga pants he was wearing.

“Sonny!” Richie hissed, not looking at all embarrassed that I’d caught him sneaking into my building. In fact, he seemed glad to see me. In a rabid sort of way. “I was afraid I was going to have to climb all those stairs to find you. How did you know I was here?”

“They’re called security cameras. Jungle should have realized we keep an eye on all of our doors. But he is thirteen. You’re thirty-six. What’s your excuse?”

“You broke up with me by voicemail,” he snapped, climbing to her feet and putting his hands on his hips. “I came here to have a little chat—and possibly grant you the gift of a second asshole—but your jerks up front wouldn’t let me in since I didn’t have an appointment. And would you answer me to schedule said appointment? No.”

“I didn’t answer, because we’re not seeing one another anymore,” I replied calmly. Or as calmly as I could manage. He looked really sexy ripping new assholes. The way his biceps bulged in that tight shirt was making me hate my zipper. I really needed some button-down trousers.

“Yeah, yeah. That breakup was total bullshit. First of all, only cowards break up with people over voicemail. You should do it face to face or not at all. Secondly, the thing about you being worried for Greta goes beyond bullshit to tyrannosaurus rex shit. I know why you broke up with me, Sonny, and it has nothing to do with Greta and everything to do with what happened on the camping trip.”

My cheeks reddened slightly, and I looked away. “I don’t want to talk about that,” I said in a flat voice, and he snorted.

“I know. That’s why you waited until four in the morning—when you knew damn well I wouldn’t pick up my phone—to call and break up with me. So you could leave your crap on the voicemail, and you wouldn’t have to talk about it. That’s pitiful, Sonny. Pitiful with a side of cowardly.”

“I know,” I admitted. “But I didn’t know what else to do.”

Richie tossed his hands up. “How about asking to get together? Talk it out? Have a discussion?”

“I don’t discuss those things.”

“What? Sex?” Richie rolled his eyes. “Believe it or not, you aren’t the only person in the world who finds sex to be a difficult topic to carry on a conversation about.”

I shook my head again. “I don’t want to talk about this, Richie.”

His lips tightened, and I flinched at the hint of doubt in his eyes. “Is it me? Is that why you don’t want to talk about it? Do you not find me attractive?”

The idea almost made me laugh, it was so far from the truth.
