Making Babies

As a side note, opinions on birth control vary in the church. I see nothing at all wrong with using it in marriage (unless it is an abortive type, like the “morning after pill”); but if a couple is adamant about never wanting a kid, that is a massive indicator of selfishness. Viewing children as a hindrance to career or inconvenience to one’s lifestyle is a new phenomena of modern society; historically they were always seen as a blessing from God. Procreation is not the only reason for sex, but it is a massive God-given part of it. When Paul says women will be saved through childbearing, this is has nothing to do with one’s eternal fate resting on her nether regions. It is about the constant recognition of our dependence on God through raising kids – as well as a constant reminder to think outside ourselves (1 Tim. 2:15). How many children have been sacrificed to the altar of human selfishness in the abortion industry? Be clear that abortion is never an acceptable means of birth control. Life begins at conception, and abortion is always murder.

Some men do not want kids because they do not want to grow up and work and take responsibility. Some young women have a hyper-feminist orientation, or people just delay childbearing for financial reasons that are selfish or greedy. Children are a blessing, but you are not commanded to have them (being fruitful and multiplying is not just a dictum on having rug rats). Jesus did not have kids. You might use birth control because you want to wait; or you are done having them; or you cannot have them for medical reasons. If you physically cannot have kids but want them, consider adoption. There is freedom here. The sin of Onan spilling his seed is not applicable to all uses of birth control. People can be legalistically for or against birth control. Some deadbeat religious zealots will heap 20 kids on their tired, ragged, homeschooling wife, unable to support them financially – all because of some self-righteous, anti-contraception dogma they try to push on everyone else. There is freedom here: but do not be selfish.

The anti-contraception crowds are often the same groups who think sex is only for procreation. Sex makes kids. But sex also makes us happy. A woman’s body comes factory-direct from God with certain parts that bring her pleasure, yet those parts have no creative purpose whatsoever for childbearing. This tells us sex is not strictly a utilitarian tool for reproduction. We can take the bald-headed gnome for a stroll in the misty forest for no other reason than the fun of it.
