Chapter Twenty-Four

“How are you kids doing?” Professor Angie Werner stopped by the trench where Dylan and his friends were digging and peered in to see what they had found.

“Really well, thank you.” Dylan wiped the sweat from his forehead, and in the process left a smear of dirt there. “We found some more of those basket remains you talked about.”

“I found more bones,” Lance added while holding up one of his finds. “Look, it even has more of those marks you said were weird.”

Professor Angie took the bone carefully from Lance and stared at it, tipping it this way and that to get a better view.

“Do you know what they mean yet?” Sofia asked. “I wondered if maybe it could be some sort of art.”

Angie shook her head. “If it is, it’s not like anything I’ve ever seen. We’re not sure how the marks were made, never mind why.” She gave the bone back to Lance and treated them all to an encouraging smile. “Keep going, though. You’re doing great. If you want to come over to the main site hut in half an hour, we’re going to talk about what we’ve found here so far.”

She walked off, and the kids got back to work, carefully clearing away dirt with brushes and trowels, looking for signs of what lay underneath.

“I heard they found a bunch of graves on the other side of the site,” Sofia said. “And some stone that no one knows how to explain.”

“Graves?” Lance asked. “Like, full of skeletons?”

“For a vegetarian, you seem way too into bones this week.”

“Just trying to get into this thing, for Dylan’s sake.”

“For my sake? You wouldn’t still be here if you weren’t enjoying it.”

“All right, fine, I admit it, this has turned out to be pretty cool. Like, every time I dig something up I imagine who it might have belonged to and what they did with it. Now there are graves, so maybe we’ll disturb some ancient spirits, and they’ll rise out of the tomb to haunt us.” He raised his hands and contorted his face into a hideous expression. “The walking dead are coming for you, Dylan Heron. We’ve heard about your nerdy ways, and we’re going to feast on your big fat brain.”

“You call that scary?” Sofia shook her head. “It’s hardly Galactus.”

Lance lowered his hands and frowned. “Actually, could that stuff be real?”

“What, Galactus? No, you dummy, it’s comics and films.”

“I mean ghosts coming back to haunt us because we dug them up. What do you think, Dylan?”

“Not that I know of.” Dylan looked at the bone Lance had found. “The only thing that’s going to haunt you today is a chicken.”

“Pecked to death!” Sofia gasped in mock horror. “The senseless brutality of it.”

They got back to digging for a little while until a shout from the main hut told them that it was time for the Professor’s talk.

From across the site, kids gathered in the temporary building set up to run the dig. The place was
