Chapter 10

Mr. Donner’s Party

An hour later, at the top of the governmental tower, Pirra entered the code to get into our mother’s office. Vicky and I rushed in and looked around for any sign of my mom. She had said she would be away. But I’d known her to lie so we wouldn’t interrupt her.

“Mom!” I called out.

“Ms. Ravenswood,” Vicky said, heading over to the window. She pulled back the curtain, and the Martian day lit the office. “I can see it.”

“Good. Let’s get the window open.” I stopped when I realized Pirra wasn’t following us. “Pirra, come on.”

“Should we really use Mom’s office? It’s a violation—”

“You work here several days a week. It’s practically your office, too.”

“It has Mom’s name—”

I walked over and grabbed her hand. “You have a table and a desk in the corner there. Stop being so noble. We have some masked men to hurt.”

This woke up my sister. “Hurt?” She rushed into the office. “I don’t think it’s a very good idea to think that way.”

I didn’t reply. I shut the door and grabbed my gear from Vicky’s bag. Our plan was simple: glide over from my mom’s building to the Donner Tower and find any evidence we could. The missing two floors were of interest to me.

I shook Vicky’s shoulder excitedly, assuring her that this was the start of the end. She nodded.

“Hurt?” Pirra grabbed my arm hard. “Revenge?”

“Justice,” I replied.

“For you,” Vicky said as she flung the window open. “We need your help, so are you coming or not?”

Pirra grumbled. The noon sun created a warm breeze, whipping my hair into my face. I pulled it away and turned to my sister. “We’re going to find something over there. Follow our adventure as you always do.”

“I’m still the same, Molly,” Pirra replied. “But the baby . . . she’s . . .”

“She’s come between us,” I said. “Vicky, too. You’ve been pushing us away to escape the sympathy.”

Pirra shook her head slowly, but she didn’t deny my statement. Instead, she said, “The balcony on the left. It will give us the best chance of landing without breaking our backs.”

I hopped up on the edge of the balcony. “I’ll go first. If I’m a puddle over there, don’t follow.”

“No,” Pirra said, grabbing my arm and pulling me down. “I’ll lead. The wind is strong, so watch my angles.”

I nodded. “Yes. And remember, no radios in the building unless it’s an emergency.”

“Why?” Vicky asked.

“Signal trackers. Every one of these buildings has it. Mom told me about them.”

Vicky nodded, but she was clearly more nervous than Pirra and I. Her eyes widened as she looked out at the Donner Tower.

“Vicky, do you understand about the wind?” Pirra asked seriously. “Do you? If you don’t, stay here.”

“I do,” Vicky replied. “Molly and I have been out to the Orcas cliffs to dive. I have my elite rating.”

“Good.”

Pirra checked her glide suit, then waved us back and launched herself out of the window. Using her hands, she glided, shaking back and forth as the wind picked up.
