Chapter Nine

"EXCUSE me, are you Mr. Garvin?"

She was a slim, attractive girl in her middle twenties, black, with marvellous eyes, and she was waiting for him as he cleared Customs at just before three o'clock on a cool bright afternoon.

"That's me. Willie Garvin." Blue eyes assessed her warily.

She said, "I'm Kim Crozier's girlfriend, Beryl."

"Ah. Kim." He relaxed a little, then stiffened again as the light coat she wore fell open and he saw the white apron of her nurse's uniform beneath. "Is Modesty all right?" he said quickly.

"Yes." She put a hand on his arm. "She's had one hell of a time, but she's all right."

"Hurt?"

"Just exhausted. Suffering a little from exposure. Kim says she ought to be dead from it, but she'll be fine in a day or two."

Willie exhaled a long breath of relief. "Thanks, Beryl. Where is she?"

"In a room at the Ashfield Hospital, under Kim's care. She spoke by phone to a man called Tarrant in London at about six this morning, before she went to sleep, and he told her you should be arriving on this flight, so Kim asked me to come along and pick you up. Let's go to the carpark, Mr. Garvin, it can take quite a time getting out of this airport."

"Call me Willie."

Fifteen minutes later they were joining light traffic moving north. The car was an Aston Martin belonging to Kim, and she handled it well, using the gears without flashiness. When they were clear of the airport Willie said, "D'you know anything about a man called Ben Christie?"

"Yes." She glanced at him. "I'm sorry, Willie, but he's dead. Do you want me to tell you what I know so far, or will you wait to hear it from Modesty?"

"She's awake now?"

"Woke up half an hour before I left. Kim's allowing two CIA men to talk to her at four. Well, I suppose CIA, but they could be Secret Service or whatever."

"Give me what you've picked up so far, please Beryl. I know the bit about Modesty and Kim in the restaurant, and her maybe blowing Ben Christie's cover."

"Yes. Kim told me about that, and he thought she was worrying unduly, but he was wrong. The trouble was, this man with Ben Christie knew her from of old, but she didn't recognise him because he'd grown a beard, and anyway she didn't see much of him way back apparently. His name's Oberon."

"Oberon?" Willie leaned his head back and closed his eyes for moment. "Oh God, what a lousy break."

"She got Kim to tail them, and Ben Christie was taken aboard a fishing boat called Old Hickory. The police found out this morning that these people bought it only two weeks ago. The boat went out to sea, Modesty stayed on the wharf and sent Kim home. That was after she'd been back to her place in Sausalito to ring Tarrant and change her clothes and get a gun and so on. But then she was picked up by two of Oberon's people pretending to be CIA men.
