These 1970s design classic chairs by Harald Relling are grouped around a sleek wooden coffee table. The effect could be minimal and modernist, but the worn green leather of the chairs, wooden wall cladding and lush house plants tip the space back towards a modern rustic look.

A wood burner stands near the entrance to the open-plan kitchen and dining space in this modern rustic Norwegian home, its dark metal helping it to blend into the wall behind. Bedrooms open off a long corridor beyond, with doors in pale plywood that contrasts with the dark clad walls.

You can then layer up your key pieces of furniture with tactile textiles and hides to add texture and a little softness. Look out for anything hand-crafted, such as a traditional Welsh blanket, faded antique kilim or woven cotton throw. Animal furs and hides, thrown over sofas and across hard floors, are another lovely addition, bringing natural colour and a super-soft feel.
