The author's two favorite axes: (top) a Corona tools Michigan-style felling axe, and a Fiskars Super Splitting Axe II.

This felling axe from Corona Tools has a Michigan-style head, and a tough fiberglass-core, polyethylene handle that’s 36 inches long to give it tremendous chopping power.

Cant Hook

Rarely seen these days, and even more seldom used, a cant hook or “cant dog” was once as common to lumber camps as an axe. Origin of this tool is lost in history, but it was almost certainly a case necessity breeding creativity.

Probably the simplest description of a cant hook is a long, stout wooden lever with a hinged iron hook (a “swing bale”) at its lower end. By placing the bottom end against a log, the hook digs into the log’s side, ever more tightly as the lever is pulled back, toward the wielder. With his muscle power and weight amplified by leverage, a lumberjack could roll or “cant” even a large and heavy log.
