CHAPTER 12

NEXT EVENT

My next scheduled two day rodeo was fairly close to home. It’s only a couple hours drive time. I was tempted to invite my family along, but then Mack might find out the reason for me being away so often, and he might quickly figure out ways to hit me up for another loan. That’s his definition of getting money from me with no repayment plan. It would be fun to have my parents and my sisters come, but how could I do that without the chance that Mack might hear about it? So I chose to go it alone. What I didn’t know is my dad and mom had already planned to come, and they were bringing my four sisters along too.

My cousin Monty, Dad’s hired hand, was holding down the fort at home. He had proved to be a very reliable worker, and he would take on any projects that needed to be done all on his own. Dad was very pleased to have him there. Of course I was happy about this as well because he will make my life at home easier too.

Just the day before I was to leave for my next competition Dad and I took some of his steers to auction. He was well pleased as he gotten top dollar for his ten head. It is Mom and Dad’s twenty fifth anniversary on the same weekend as my rodeo, so he had promised her a weekend away. But with my four sisters tagging along, it wasn’t going to be a very romantic getaway for them. What I didn’t know was this getaway for them was Mom’s idea. She and Dad hadn’t been to any of my pro events in the more than four years. The last rodeo they saw me ride in goes back to when I competed in the junior events while I was still in high school.

I was already on the road when my cell phone went off. It was Dad calling me. He wanted to let me know about their plans to come watch me compete. He was quick to say, “I’m glad I hired your Cousin Monty Billings to take Mack’s place. Monty and his brother, Samuel, are watching the ranch this weekend.”

Then he added, “Don’t worry, we didn’t tell Mack where we are going. I simply told him we were going away for the long weekend and that your sisters are with us.”

I’d miss spending time away at this rodeo with my friend, Zane, so it would be good to have my family there to spend time with and maybe get to eat several meals with. Zane had told me that he might try to come for the day and watch me preform on Sunday afternoon. That would give me a chance to introduce him to my family. He had also said it would all depends on if he can get out of a commitment at his church that afternoon. He had offered to help with feeding the poor and homeless on Sunday after their second service.
