Annaliese wasn’t there when Will arrived the next morning. He checked the time on his phone as he unlocked the door. No, he wasn’t that early. He stepped inside, flipping the lights on in his store.

There it was, where he’d left it the previous night. The fake bear he’d rescued from the back alley was still in that awkward position near the register. It was awkward because he’d done it to deliberately put himself under the mistletoe.

He smiled to himself as he remembered the kiss. Yes, the ending had been…not ideal, but how could he discount the kiss itself? He couldn’t. He’d arranged things so he’d have an excuse to kiss her, sure, but the passion in that kiss had been all too real. He’d try to focus on that rather than the way she pretty much ran from his store afterward.

And now she was late for opening her shop. Will could see her storefront from here, and it remained dark inside even as the numbers on his smartphone screen crept closer to open time. Should he be worried? Maybe he should call to check on her.

The problem with that was, he didn’t know her number. He supposed it made sense. They had, after all, only known each other a couple of days. It wasn’t like he needed to call her to talk to her anyway. Most of the day, he could just walk out his door, take a few steps, and be standing in front of her.

When he stepped to the front door to turn the switch to unlock it, he saw her. She was walking up to her store, Poppy following behind her with that same joyful strut she always had.

He should stay here and mind his own business. If Annaliese wanted to see him, she’d come over here. In fact, he should just wait her out and see if she came to him.

So why was he pushing the door to his store open and walking out into the chilly morning air?

“Good morning!” he called out just as she pushed the door to her store open. She froze, turning to look at him, and the memory of last night’s kiss hit him full force. He’d had his fair share of first kisses over the course of his life, but that one had been the most powerful he could remember. He’d known he was attracted to her, but the kiss had taken things to the next level.

Problem was, he wasn’t sure if she’d felt the same thing.

“Good morning,” she said. “I’m running behind, but I see it doesn’t really matter.”

Will laughed. “Yeah, not exactly busy. I was thinking about running down and grabbing a cup of coffee. Could you keep an eye on my storefront? Make sure the bear doesn’t walk out.”

That was a lot, he realized as her eyebrows arched. He wasn’t sure which piece of the information he’d dumped on her that she’d choose for her response.

“Grizz is loose in the store?” she asked. The smile on her face told him she didn’t really think that.
