Chapter 17: Weak Eyes

Arizona held June tightly to her bosom. She had no understanding as to why she and the baby had been abducted, except that she'd heard rumors of women being forced into bordellos and babies sold on the black market.

While her kidnapper charged past trees and shrubs, she heard gunfire and prayed no one from the Big G got hurt. June continued screaming and she did her best to comfort the child, although it was impossible with the galloping horse. Her cheek ached from being punched and felt swollen.

The outlaw seemed to know where he was going because he skirted known trails and kept his horse moving southward. After maybe five hours, he guided his bay into a canyon. An hour later, he entered a narrow gap between large outcroppings of boulders. Soon, Arizona was lost in the maze. June had exhausted herself crying and now slept. The babe would wake soon and be hungry.

The outlaw rounded another outcropping and approached a shack. He dismounted and reached toward Arizona. None too gently, he grabbed her waist and hauled her off the horse. June whimpered, but did not wake up.

He commanded, "Go in the cabin."

Without questioning his order, she entered the shabby hut. It was tiny and the only furniture was a warped plank table and a couple of hand-hewn chairs. She sat in the sturdiest appearing chair, not even wiping the dust off. She didn't want to wake June.

Through the open doorway, she saw the cowboy tending his horse. For the next hour she planned different strategies for escape.

In the afternoon, other men joined them and she assumed they were the same outlaws from that morning. She watched the man who had brought her to the cabin walk toward them and heard him say, "It's about time."

"Hell, Perkins, we don't need none o' yer lip. We been savin' yer ass so's you could get away. But ya gotta admit, it was perfect the way the woman went fer a walk with the kid so's we didn't have to storm the house."

Perkin's spit tobacco on the ground. "Yeah, it worked out good. Ya wanna spend the night here or move on?"

The same outlaw answered. "It's best if we keep movin'. Them cowboys is mad as hornets."

The other outlaw asked, "So how's the mother and babe?"

Perkins said, "Hell if I know. I guess they're okay. I ain't heard no cryin'."

June started to stir and fuss as the three men walked into the room.

Perkins dropped his saddlebags on the floor next to the door and the sound startled June. Another cowboy knelt in front of Arizona. "Ma'am, we don't mean ya no harm. We're jus' deliverin' ya to a man who paid fer our services." He bent his head lower to look at Arizona's face covered by her bonnet. She met his gaze straight on. He blinked, blinked again, and then jumped to his feet, shouting, "This ain't the mother!" His loud voice started June screaming and kicking.

Perkins and the other cowboy rushed to the table.
