“No!” Jarell yelled, unsure of what had just attacked the manatees.

The colorful mist tightened into a long tentacle and surged toward Kimisi and Jarell.

Kimisi charged with her spear and Jarell grabbed his staff. The tentacle of mist stopped just a few yards away. By its glowing light, Jarell could see the pulse of the current that separated them from the strange mist creature.

“The current!” Kimisi called out. “It’s keeping the mist away from us. Swim into the current!”

They fell into the current’s slipstream and watched as the tentacle of mist reared back as if it had been burned, disappearing into the darkness.

Jarell and Kimisi shot toward Bool and Chip. They lay very still on the seabed.

“They’ve been turned to stone,” Kimisi said. “Poor things.”

The manatees lay on the seafloor, too heavy for even the current to move. Their skin had turned completely dark gray and crusty and their jet-black eyes were completely still.

Jarell hovered his hands over their bodies. He tried to feel his connection with his ancestral powers to heal them, focusing his mind just like he had to heal his friend Chinell, the painted wolf, in his first visit to Ulfrika. But there was something different this time. Jarell could sense nothing except the knowledge that this was beyond the healing powers even his ancestors had possessed. He was helpless.

“Jarell, we need to go before it returns,” Kimisi urged.

“We can’t just leave them like this,” Jarell cried. “They’re our friends.”

“Wait! They told us that the pearl heals, and we know it breaks curses. The pendant might be able to help them too,” she replied. “But if we’re turned to stone, no one will be saving anyone.” She fished out two discs from her belt. “Here—these are tracking beacons. Once we have the cure, we’ll be able to find them again.”

Jarell nodded reluctantly as Kimisi attached the discs to the manatees’ rock-hard back fins. “We’ll be back for you,” he whispered to his new friends, who lay as still as statues. “I promise.”

Jarell and Kimisi entered the forest. They could not glide in between the giant seaweed stalks like the deadly mist. Instead, they had to hack at the weeds with their spear and staff.

Jarell soon realized that the bright-green seaweed was the strongest. It took ages to cut. But the browner seaweed with the rougher outer shell was the weakest. Some of those seaweed stalks were dead and could be cut with his staff in a single swipe. Together, Jarell and Kimisi cut deeper and deeper into the weeds until they found a gap in the center of the dense forest. It was wide enough to stand side by side. Two paths stretched out in front of them.

“Someone definitely made these paths,” Jarell said. “They’ve got to go somewhere.”

“What if they lead somewhere we don’t want to go?” Kimisi asked.

“Well, if you don’t turn the corner, you can’t know what’s ahead,” said Jarell. “That’s what my granddad always told us.”

“That sounds like an Ulfrikan saying for sure.” Kimisi stared at both paths.
