Chapter Seven

He pulled back and gestured for Mai-Lan to repeat her strict officer routine. She walked forward, found the guard, and her voice cracked out like a whip. The man emerged from his post; a niche dug into the side of the tunnel. His AK was slung on his shoulder, so no immediate threat. She barked a question he didn’t understand and didn’t care either way. While she was talking with the soldier, he’d dropped to his hands and knees, crawling forward to remain below his line of sight until he was close enough to strike.

He struck hard, using all his strength. Slammed the steel butt of his Colt on the side of the man’s head below the rim of his pith helmet, and he felt the bones breaking as the heavy steel smashed his skull. He went straight down, and Heller leaped on him in case he needed another dose of pain. He didn’t. It looked like the blow had been so powerful it’d smashed his skull and forced fragments of bone into his brain. He was dead, and that suited him just fine. Any who treated other men as badly as they did in this place had no claim on life. He didn’t subscribe to McGuigan’s ‘the only good gook is a dead gook’ philosophy. But in the case of the man who guarded this place, he’d make an exception.

Mai-Lan covered him, her AK-47S levelled ready to respond if they’d been spotted. He slid back the bolts on the door and opened it to stare into a space around fifteen feet square. The stench was even more powerful. He thought the place was empty until he heard slight sounds of movement. Men breathing, coughing, and the rustle of movement in the straw scattered around the floor.

A man looked up, a round-eye. He’d come to the right place. “Any Americans in here?”

At first, there was no reply. He guessed it hadn’t sunk in that he’d spoken with an American accent. One man eventually coughed to clear his throat. Blinked as he tried to peer through the darkness and make out who’d spoken. “What do you want?”

“To get you out of here.”

“What did you just say? Who the hell are you?”

“The name’s Heller. Recon, Master Sergeant.”

“You’re…” the voice trailed away, unable to comprehend.

Another man mumbled hoarsely, “Did you say you’ve come to get us out?”

“I did, but we have to make it fast. We’ve been lucky so far, but it can’t last.”

“You’re here to get us out? For real?”

“That’s right. Get on your feet. We need to get the other guys out, and we can leave.”

“Jesus Christ, I don’t believe it.”

“Believe it and get moving.”

They scrambled to their feet. There were a dozen men packed into that stinking cell, and one told him there were eight other cells. “We used to be more crowded, but a lot of men died. My name’s Levitt, by the way. Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force.”

He was tall, and like the rest of them, extremely thin.
