Chapter 22: Conniving

Sam halted before the stern-faced Norgoth seated at the table in the large inn common room. She had stood in line for over an hour to finally stand here. She had taken on the persona of a female guard she had seen at the outpost where she had been told that recruits were being accepted at the Red Table Inn.

The soldier looked up at her and scowled. “Another girlie who wants to be a soldier. Who puts these ideas into their heads?” he spat. “OK, kid, you know you might break a nail or stub your toe if we take you?”

Sam looked him dead in the eye. “I come from a military family. My mother was infantry. I want to defeat the Alliance.”

Her simple statement seemed to take the man aback. “Fine. Name?”

By the time they had her paperwork finished, he handed her a piece of paper and was instructed to take it to the outpost, and she would be directed from there.

Sam gritted her teeth, took the paper with the stamp on it and went back to the outpost. She altered her face only slightly, but enough to not be a duplicate of the guard, but she wasn’t at the post anymore. A large bulbous-nosed Norgoth slouched at his post. She handed him her paper and he mumbled something about “another one”.

“Go down this road to the very end. Intake is the last building on the left.” He handed her back her paper and slouched once again, staring straight ahead of him as if she were now invisible.

That suited her just fine. The road toward the intake building was long and crisscrossed with many side streets. The post seemed like a small city in and of itself. Various vehicles powered by everything from pedals to beasts to engines that purred made their way down the streets in an orderly manner. Sam was unable to determine any type of stop signs, but there were no collisions at intersections, each vehicle pausing as needed to give right of way to another. She was sure there were some kind of rules to how they managed this, but she couldn’t discern what they could possibly be.

Pedestrians made their way up and down the sides of the paved streets, obviously on one errand or another. Sam made a point of looking neither to the left or right. She had no interest in any of these. She just wanted to get started.

Finally, she arrived at the last building on the left. Like every Inseni building she had ever seen, it was plain. Simplicity and usefulness were the order of the day for the Inseni. She entered the open double doors into an entryway and got into another line, each Norgoth with a paper identical to her own, clutched in their hands. As she waited she stared straight ahead, making no attempt to engage anyone in conversation.

Around her, however, many conversations buzzed. The young Norgoth’s waiting in line were full of speculation about what it would be like to conquer gloriously in battle.
