Friday Afternoon

Before Mother opens the cell gate that cages the prisoner with the silver eyes, she grabs an empty glass jar from her trophy shelf. Then with a flick of her wrist, she renders the man immobile, allowing only his eyeballs to move.

I can sense the man’s panic, and he grunts in fear.

“First, you must keep them still—I can teach you that spell later.” She turns the key, and we walk inside.

The massive, muscled man, although strong, doesn’t stand a chance against my mother’s spell. He attempts to bellow, but her witchcraft has compelled his lips fixed shut.

“Then you open his mouth like this.” She stands directly in front of the unmoving man and pinches his jaw, forcing it open. Even then, he hasn’t a voice to protest her intrusion. “These creatures are quite the delicacies,” she adds. “Of course, the human variety is best of all, but this hybrid half-wolf man will do.”

She moves toward his lips but doesn’t kiss them, instead she takes in a deep breath, and I witness his very skin begin to shrivel and dry.

I’m horrified. “Mom, stop, you’re killing him.” I’ve never witnessed such atrocities like this before, even though Raven Academy has taught the subject several times and warned of its outcomes.

I look over at the prince still unconscious. His chest rises and falls slowly. It’s no secret that this man my mother is killing is the prince’s friend. I saw how passionately he fought on his behalf.

Turning her focus toward me, Mother glares with her eyes glowing a bright blue, and says, “Perhaps you should try.” Her expression looks demonic.

I’ve never seen her like this before. Aghast, I take a step backward. “No. I’m not hungry.”

“Very well.” She tilts her head, studying my reaction. “I see you’re not ready. You will be, though. Your eighteenth birthday will be here soon. By then, you will know how to pull the essence from your victims.”

She turns back to her prey, but I interrupt her. “Why are you doing this?”

She hisses, annoyed by my intrusion. “My daughter, have I not taught you anything?” She drops the man to the floor and steps toward me. She’s taken so much of his energy he’s too weak to stand. I can hear his painful moans.

Frightened, I step back again, trying hard not to stutter. “Please, Mother. I’m sorry. I promise I’ll learn how to do it. I’m honestly not hungry right now,” I lie.

Mother stiffens, and I know deep down she doesn’t believe me. “Is that so?” She raises a brow and looks over my shoulder to the other prisoners huddled in the far corner of their cells, observing the wickedness. “Perhaps we should start out small. Will a human heart be more to your liking?”

I shake my head. “No, I told you I’m not hungry.”

She lifts her chin. I know she doesn’t believe me. “Right.” Firming her lips, she turns back around to the weak man lying helpless on the ground. “We can’t have food going to
