chapter thirteen

Miles walks beside me as we climb the stairs to the house, although I very well could be walking by myself with how distant he is. His mind is far away as we go in and he steers toward the drawing room. He stops at the closed doors, reaches for the doorknob, and then drops his hand. He closes his eyes just like he had in the carriage and takes a couple deep breaths. When he opens his eyes, he finds me and gives me a half smile before straightening his shoulders and walking through the door. I don’t know if I’m supposed to follow, so I decide to get my things settled in my room before seeing anyone.

As I go up the stairs I hear Annie shriek behind me. “Grace! I have been so worried about you! Where have you been? Do you know Miles was out all night looking for you? I am so happy to see you.” She crashes into me and we both almost plummet to the ground. Her arms are like vises around my neck. “Do not do that again.” I can hear the tenderness in her voice, and the whimpers she’s keeping down.

Suddenly her head pops up. “Father’s home! Come, you must meet him.” She tugs me back down the stairs and my heart stammers. Miles looked so anxious to see him. I don’t think I want to meet him. Annie guides me through the doors while proclaiming, “Father, this is Miss Gentry. The one I told you about.” Annie sounds so proud to have me on her arm. I look around the room and find Miles by the fireplace. His head is pointed at the fire. I can only see his profile, but that’s enough to worry me.

I slowly look around and see Lord Denley standing in the middle of the room. He’s a large man and strongly built. He has broad shoulders and big arms; I can tell by the straining of his jacket around his biceps. He looks like he hasn’t shaved in a while as the beginning of a dark beard is showing. The confidence that exudes from him makes me feel small. His eyes rest on me and then widen, shock crossing his face. I look at Miles, then to Annie for some kind of help.

“Forgive me, Miss Gentry. I am making you uncomfortable. My name is Miles Denley.” He looks over his shoulder to Miles, and with a big smile he says, “The First.” I never would’ve thought that such a sweet voice could come out of such a scary man. “Excuse my staring, but you look so much like your father.”

The only thing I can do is blink. I keep blinking, thinking it’ll clear up the confusion swirling around in my head. I open my mouth to speak but the words hang on my lips.

“Be careful, Father, this one has a tendency to faint.” I can hear the laugh in Miles’ voice as he walks over to me.
