Missing Necklaces, Disappearing Keys, and Slippery Pens

Next week on cleaning day, Mother woke me up bright and early.

"Mother," I hollered. "Why are you waking me at the booty-crack of dawn?"

"It's time to work," she sang.

"You're not supposed to be happy this early," I said. I crunched my pillow over my ears and squinched my eyes shut real tight.

Mother used those hands to start tickling me right under my armpits. That's my squirmiest place, and she knows it.

"Not fair," I shrieked. I half-giggled and half-screamed my big ol' lungs out. I scooted all around my bed. Kind of how a fish flip-flops back and forth if you take him out of water. (But Mother gets such angry eyes when I try to pet my fish Hercules Azul out of water. She always says the words Megan Malone, he's not Monster.)

She tickled me for so long my stomach got shook up, and I let out a little fart. Then Mother backed up real fast and said the phrase Stink Bomb.

"Mother," I said. I stood up and put my hands on my hips like you're supposed to do when giving someone a stern look. Stern is when you know they've done something wrong.

I tapped my foot. "Look what you've done! My bed is a mess."

The sheets were all rumpled, and my pillow landed where my feet were supposed to go.

"NO! Pooh-berry." I rescued him from the crack between my bed and the wall. Who knows what might eat him if he fell down the scary wall crack and landed in my under-bed.

"You can practice for work today by making your bed," said Mother. She had one of those smug smiles on her face.

"Mrawww," I screeched like a dinosaur. On account of that was my frustrated noise.

"Ten dollars," Mother said. Those words sounded so appetizing. Kind of like lime green cupcakes with hot pink frosting and beauteous rainbow sprinkles.

I shook my head. I said to Mother very solemn. "Mother, I will make my bed and get ready for work. 'Cause that way I can save money to buy a real iPad for my business!"

I set my head back on the pillow to give my eyelids a few more seconds to nap. But then: Briiiiing, briiiiiiiiiing!

Mother answered the phone "Mrs. Vanish, good morning. Yes, I'm just leaving now."

I crept out towards my door and whispered at my under-bed for Monster to slow her wheel roll so I could hear Mother. Spying on phone calls was one of the best features about my business. Dee and Lena hated it. Lena especially when she was talking to a boy in the fifth grade. Even though, I'm not sure why she would ever want to talk to any boy besides Dad.

"Let me grab a pen and paper quickly," Mother said into the phone.

I ran right over to Mother and handed over my squishy iPad. Mini Pies are always prepared for lists!

Thank you said Mother. Except I think that her voice got lost on her way to her mouth because no sound actually came out.
