Chapter 6

Charity

I wake up alone, the smell of coffee coming through the closed bedroom door from the kitchen. We fell asleep mid-conversation shortly after crawling into bed, the emotions of the day exhausting both of us.

Throughout the night, Bishop had a fitful sleep—twitching as if he was shaking off a bad dream. Each time, I wrapped my arms around him, threw my leg over his, pressed my cheek against his heart, and did my best to be his weighted blanket. He calmed instantly, his arms tightening and pulling me close like in the elevator, but he never woke up.

It was scary, and yet somehow sweet, as if I were made to be the balm to his tortured soul.

Considering I feel lighter this morning than I have in over a year, I’m thinking he’s the balm for my broken and battered soul, too.

I roll out of bed, noting the time before throwing on my robe and stuffing my feet into my fuzzy slippers. Shuffling into the living room/kitchen, I smile when Bishop brings his eyes up from his phone. “Good morning.”

He sets his phone down and comes around the island to pull me against his hard body. He’s shirtless, wearing only his boxer shorts, his skin warm despite the cooler temperature of the winter morning. “Yes it is, angel. A very good morning.”

“How long have you been up?”

“A couple of hours.” Considering it’s only eight, I have to wonder if he is an early riser, or if his inability to sleep has something to do with his dreams.

“Did you not sleep okay?”

“I slept great. Probably the best I have in a year. Did you?”

“Yes.” I wrap my arms around him and press a kiss to his sternum. “Were you working out?”

“Just a few push-ups and sit-ups to wake myself up. I hope you don’t mind that I helped myself and made coffee.”

“I don’t mind at all. Did you leave me a cup?”

“Of course, but I’ll make you a fresh pot if you don’t like it. We drink it strong and black in the military.”

“That’s exactly how I like it before I doctor it up with sweetener and cream.” He hands me a hot cup, and I fix it the way I like with my sugar-free syrups and half-and-half. Bishop watches my process carefully, and I’m guessing he’ll be making me my coffee tomorrow. The idea alone is enough to make me swoon.

I take my first sip and sigh contently, smiling up at him. “What time are we heading to the kennels?”

He tilts his head toward his phone. “I got a text from Karden. He said this afternoon would be best—somewhere around two. I guess Hollywood is in town and he’ll be there.”

“Hollywood?”

“Yeah, he was with me and your brother when…”

I nod my understanding. “I think I would like to meet him, too.”

Bishop pulls me into his arms, and it’s easy for me to believe that I am his security blanket. He puts his chin on top of my head and sighs, holding me tightly.
