Dawson and I were around his little flat. The flat that looked as though it was rat infested. I never understood how he lived like he had a pound to his name and yet he made thousands of pounds a day. I had always struggled to get my head around it. We had been spending more and more time together. I had needed a friend. I needed friends in Shropshire. I needed him. I couldn’t remember the last time I had let myself go back to visit my brother. He had made a full recovery and even Av was getting a little better. Her mental state went right down the shitter after I came back home. Dawson had recommended some damn good therapists down there for her and according to Jay she had been going more regularly.

We were more alike than I probably liked to think. Talking didn’t fix her, just like talking hadn’t fixed me, no matter how hard Dawson tried. My best mate Benjamin Dawson. The shrink that probably needed a shrink. My nights were often plagued by nightmares of my family, mainly they included Haz, the nights I wasn't having nightmares, I was lying awake wondering if he was eventually going to stop breathing. I hated thinking about Chlo the most. The memories of seeing her wrapped around Bella like a delicate piece of silk still haunted me on many nights. I ached to be close to her again and instead I was wrapped around my own real-life nightmare. One that I had made myself, one that I had kept hanging on myself. Dawson threw the controls to the gaming console on the table and frowned as he crossed his arms.

“Fucking FIFA!” He protested. I forced a little chuckle from my lips. “You dwelling on the past again son?” His tone was teasing, and I rolled my eyes.

“I’m thinking about how the witch tricked me into buying her a fucking ring.” I blurted a little pissed up. He laughed. I didn’t find it funny. It made me feel sick to my stomach that I had broken my promise. A promise that now seemed almost impossible to keep. I had promised Chlo that I would never marry Hazel and yet it seemed like that was something that was going to happen relatively soon.

“Well Simon thinks you’ve done really well with her.” Dawson tried to offer me words of encouragement. It wasn’t that Hazel was a bad woman. She wasn’t really, a little troubled maybe, but she loved me. Hell, she fucking worshipped me and that made it worse. I let my thoughts run to my son. He was so much like his mum; he had her slender frame and dark mass of hair, but he had my eyes. Deep dark blue eyes. I smiled a little now. He was already three years old. Time had flown by in the blink of an eye and yet my life seemed to be at a standstill. Everyone else around me had got on with life and I had paused.
