CHAPTER 11: PURSUE PASSION, DISCOVER PURPOSE

Discover Purpose in the Process of Pursuing Passion

Everybody can relate to passion. When you have a passion for something, you know it! You enjoy doing it. You may or may not be good at it, but you plan time in your life for it. Passion is realized when you budget time in your life for doing the things you enjoy. Oftentimes passion gets confused with purpose, but there’s a distinct difference between the two.

You may have many passions in your life. Every passion does not become your purpose, but every purpose requires passion to pursue it. There must be an element of desire before passion can develop. Desire produces passion. Your mind will say, “I want to do this!”

Your will power will say, “I will do this no matter what!”

Your emotions will say, “I love doing this.”

Determination and Will Power=Passion

Passion: Want to do it; will do it; love doing it

This means that you must claim your power. You are not a victim, you are not alone, and you can create the life you want. Stir up your passion for life, and go after it! When you want something bad enough, everything in your soul aligns to work toward the same goal. When you have passion, it will drive you to move forward. Passion is displayed through your determination and will power. Passion becomes the internal drive that motivates your pursuit.

Passion is that internal force that causes you to stay up all night reading a book. It will drive you to practice your favorite sport in the rain. Passion will push you to become the best at what you love to do. Then soon, people will pay you for doing what you love. When that happens, your passion has become a pathway to your provision.

Tell yourself, “My passion has the power to bring me provision.”

You may be on a path to discovering your purpose and will find that it is linked to serving other people. Passion becomes the internal drive that motivates your pursuit.

Proverbs 20:5 enlightened my understanding about purpose.

Proverbs 20:5 (NIV) “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.”

We have multi-purposes deep down in our heart and soul, but they will only be discovered if we are insightful enough to seek them out. Since we have multi-purposed lives, I believe that each season of our life unfolds new purpose. Get personal with this area of your life. Define your passions. Define your purpose as you understand it today.

My purpose continues to evolve. In reflection, I have identified two common threads that have been present in every stage or season of my life. As a young girl, I stood on the front porch with paper and pencil in hand, pretending to be a teacher and instructing my little brother. As a teenager, I assisted my home-economics instructor with teaching my classmates sewing basics. After completing college, I pursued my interest in liturgical dance. Then, for over twenty years I ate, slept, and breathed the worship arts ministry of dance.
